ERA-IB 3 consortium has started work (May 2013)
REACTIF cluster - objectives of the joint project
The production of n-butanol from fermentation of sugar using Clostridia has tremendous industrial potential. n-Butanol is an important chemical intermediate for paints plastics, coatings and polymers. Butanol production via fermentation is sustainable, environmentally friendly and offers a lower cost route than synthetic production from oil. The aim of the REACTIF cluster is to deliver improved Clostridia strains with enhanced growth rates and tolerance to deviations in commercial process condition, increased tolerance to cellulosic feedstock inhibitors and improved tolerance to the end product butanol.
The three metrics that will be used to assess performance are solvent yield, titre and productivity. The industrial partners will develop a basis for design for an integrated hydrolysis and fermentation process.
Within this joint research project our department adresses subproject 2: Genome based and transcriptome based optimization of clostridial production strains.
